The beginnings of Ferrous Aluminum Silicate, if I don't miss my guess.

I've collected staurolites as single black prisms in schist in Hyatt Creek, Extreme Western North Carolina(one big ol cobble resides near my tomato patch, and has three-inch long crystals; that one took some hauling to get out of the creek), and as 'fairy crosses' near Blairsville, Georgia. All straight, no St. Andrew's.

None of 'em looked like that one there, now.

Must be sump'n special, that one.
