The Visible Dreamer

As a professional dreamer myself, I can identify with this face.
Unmolded, less than clear attributes, it awaits direction. The want is there; the desire is obvious. Give it a directive and it's off to do your bidding. Or so you think.
"You," in this instance, are a comptroller at The Zeta House. The Zeta House is Dream Central, phishing for those with strong personalities and deep dream abilities.
Now "You" are "You" again.
They find you in your dream state and appropriate you to make those subtle changes that make things the way The Zeta House thinks should be. You wake exhausted, with the tail end of the most realistic dream you've ever had reverberating in your soul; then, of course, it's gone. As all dreams, it fades to mist.
But you remember in fits and starts.
The Zeta House preys on those who are exhausted, bored with their lives, or working at meaningless, underachieving jobs. Not the true underachievers, mind you. They could never get the jobs done that the Zeta House sets them up to do. It takes exceptional fortitude to become a professional dreamer. Many of us end up working at nothing but with the ability to do much more.
And if you show an aptitude, The Zeta House will come back again and again, sometimes night after night, to right those wrongs and battle those they consider to be doing negative bidding. The Zeta House only cares for one thing; to keep The Beam moving in the direction they want it to move.
Disruptors are not welcome. They are to be persuaded to change to their understanding of the direction of The Beam, or they are to be destroyed.
That's where The Dreamwalkers come in.
And we all start just as much a blank canvas as this face.
But some of us know something beyond The Zeta House. Something very important.
The Zeta House is wrong about The Beam.
It runs in more than one direction.
In fact, there are several Beams, possibly thousands.
And they are circular.
Look for The Mechanics of Destiny. They know. Look for other Dreamwalkers in your dreams. And in life.
WE know.
You are palette and artist alike, and you can mix your own colors and apply them any way you like.
Just like this face.

So dreamers become slaves to the Zeta House? What is it we're bidden to do?

I think I have seen the Dreamwalkers. At first, they look like members of The Crowd, as in the Bradbury story. Later, they look like the Book People, as in the Bradbury story.

But how does one recognize the Mechanics of Destiny and why should one want to?

Dreamwalkers do, in a sense, become slaves of The Zeta House. But the more they are used to keep The Beam going in the direction The Zeta House wants, the more the Dreamwalkers realize that they are being used. Yet they also become professionals in conflict resolution, the main goal of The Zeta House. Dreamwalkers work in teams, and often the same Walkers work together time after time. In this way they get to know one another as well as you know others in the Waking World. Dreamwalkers in my team are successful in conflict resolution about sixty per cent of the time, and when resolution cannot be achieved, the conflicting parties are destroyed. Utterly. It's a messy business, and any team of Dreamwalkers get very close through both resolution and execution. Do walkers ever meet in the Waking World? It happens all the time, but recognition is almost impossible. But there is often some electric connection between them when they do meet. I have not heard of Walkers that have recognised one another in full in the Waking World, and it hasn't happened to me. But I have been a Dreamwalker for a very long time, and The Zeta House doesn't use me as much as they once did. One reason may be that they know that I know their secret, one I cannot divulge here. But I will tell you this; there is revolution in the ranks, and it comes from Dreamwalkers as well as other agents, often called Disruptors. Some think we are all working towards the same goal. You yourself have been to The Zeta House. It is a physical place as well as a huge bureaucracy. I've seen you there. So has your mother.
