I am having a quandary (and hope to invite everyone over to share it soon) about the term "peckish." My Funk and Wagnalls' doesn't even mention the word, and my Compact Oxford (I know I should have the real thing) is, well, too terse. Oxford definition; "Hungry." That has always been MY understanding of the word. But my Scrabble Dictionary (sorry, besides the F&W, it's alls I gots) says "Irritable," which seems more bent to your context. What do you make of all this, Al? Other than the obvious point that I need to update my dictionaries.

ReplyDeletePeckish (syn.) cranky, fractious, irritable, nettlesome, peevish, petulant, testy, tetchy, etc.
ReplyDeleteYou get that way from being hungry, among other things. Example: All fad diets lead to ilbigradient peckism.
